A Better Solution to Sit-Down Screening
Isn’t it ironic that we spend ten times as many hours deciding which $5000 piece of equipment to buy as we do hiring the $30,000-a-year person who will run it? As much as many elements of the selection process have changed as new generations have entered the marketplace, the interview seems to have remained the same. Yes, the questions have gotten better in some cases, but we still sit down across the table from the applicant and ask about the same predictable issues that one can find in any book on getting a job. Yong applicants with even a little common sense enter the intervewing process well rehearsed. They have a picture of what the setting will look like and are prepared to deliver responses thay they know will impress the average screener. With the resources available today, those in Generation X and the Millennials have been able to meet the challenge of the traditional interview and, in many cases, turn it to their advantage.
But some managers have overcome this ineffective way of doing things with a technique I call interviewing by walking around. It is an action oriented process that will keep applicants off balance and therefore produce more honesty and candor. Read an article about it on the Gentrends website and let me know what you think. Next time: Doing it in the walk-in freezer.

Thank you for the article on the walking interview. I found it most
interesting and intend to use it in the next few days. I’ll keep you
posted as to it’s usefulness in my nursing setting.
